United Way of San Diego County, the plan sponsor for HealthWay Trust, the benefit provider to thousands of San Diego nonprofit employees over the past 20 years, this week transitioned plan sponsorship to the California Association of Nonprofits — CalNonprofits — to provide nonprofits statewide with its unique health insurance options.

HealthWay Trust currently provides insurance to 36 San Diego nonprofits including San Diego Service Center for the Blind, Bayview Baptist Church, and Community Catalyst. One of HealthWay’s value propositions is its “all-in-one” system: a nonprofit can enroll its employees in health insurance, dental insurance, COBRA flexible spending accounts for health and dependent care, a comprehensive wellness program, and more, and plan employees receive just one bill per month.

United Way started HealthWay Trust in 1995 as a service to the nonprofits of San Diego County. The Trust, with UWSD serving in the sponsor role, allowed HealthWay to serve as a multiple employer group purchasing agent to secure the best employee benefits-related products and pricing in the market for the participating non-profit organizations that have comprised the Trust over the last 20 years.

“We founded HealthWay 20 years ago because San Diego nonprofits didn’t have affordable, quality options for employee health insurance,” said Kevin Crawford, President & CEO of United Way of San Diego County. “As the work and business model of United Way has changed, it makes sense to transfer the sponsorship to CalNonprofits. As a result, nonprofit employees across the state will continue to have quality options for a long time to come.”

CalNonprofits assumed the role of plan sponsor on June 1, 2015. “We can’t wait to make HealthWay’s services available to our 9,400 nonprofit members statewide," commented Jan Masaoka, CalNonprofits CEO. “It gives us yet another excellent option to offer the 800 nonprofits and 17,000 nonprofit employees that already work with us through our social enterprise, CalNonprofits Insurance Services (CIS).”

“I’m glad HealthWay will still be here for nonprofits,” noted Lenore Lowe, Executive Director of Nonprofit Management Solutions. “We’re looking forward to partnering with CalNonprofits to give HealthWay Trust the higher profile it deserves — in San Diego and across the state.”
