The $10,000 Community Engagement Champion Award is given every year by CalNonprofit Insurance Services to a nonprofit that exemplifies the values and spirit of community organizations. The award recognizes organizations that are champions for their clients, patrons, and constituents by engaging their wider community.
Our panel of independent judges makes the award to an organization that actively connects with their community and brings people together regularly; effectively uses community engagement to improve the lives of their clients, stakeholders, constituents, or society, or influences the way that the nonprofit does its work; and looks for ways to support other nonprofits as community engagement champions.
This year, the award was presented at the CalNonprofits Annual Convention to Bread & Roses Presents, an organization that brings hope, healing and joy through live music to organizations in eight counties throughout the Bay Area where people are isolated.
Founded in 1974 by the late singer-songwriter Mimi Fariña, they also inspire and mentor people in a variety of organizations in other geographic locations who seek help in starting similar programs. They are at the hub of a giant wheel of community engagement connecting over 120 partners in the social service world with over 350 different individual and performing arts groups in any given year through 600 programs annually.
Dave Perron, Executive Director, said, "Bread & Roses Presents is honored to receive this year's Community Engagement Award from the California Association of Nonprofits. For over four decades, we have held steadfast to our mission of bringing live music and performance to those who are isolated in the Bay Area and need it most. This state-wide recognition means a great deal to us as we strive to sustain and expand our future legacy."
"As board chair of Bread & Roses Presents,” added Stacey Nelson, “I know that this award will bring wind to our sails as we work to bring the healing power of live music to more people who are living in institutional settings. We're working hard to bring in the next generation of volunteers and supporters. We see first-hand in our daily shows how much the direct engagement of music and other performing arts means to isolated children, youth, adults and seniors throughout the Bay Area.”
