A new Assembly Select Committee focusing on the nonprofit sector held its first meeting Wednesday, June 21st from 2:00 to 3:30pm in the State Capitol, Room 444. See the Agenda here.

The Committee started its historic work with a hearing to learn more about the nonprofit community, led by the Chair of the Committee, Assemblymember Monique Limón. In addition to Assemblymember Limón's opening remarks, the agenda included:

• Shamus Roller, Executive Director of the National Housing Law Project and CalNonprofits Board Member, providing an overview of the significant contributions the nonprofit sector makes to California.

• The oversight roles that state entities provide were discussed by Audrey Rowe, Exempt Organizations Unit, Franchise Tax Board; Sirat K. Attapit, Office of Legislative Affairs, Department of Justice; and Gene Takagi of NEO Law Group with a federal perspective.

• Speaking on the critical partnership of nonprofits, philanthropy and government was CalNonprofits CEO Jan Masaoka; Efrain Escobedo, Vice President for Civic Engagement and Public Policy at the California Community Foundation, and Karen Baker, Chief Service Officer at California Volunteers.

In addition to Assemblymember Limón, other members of the committee are Catharine B. Baker (Rep-16), Marc Berman (Dem-24),Anna M. Caballero (Dem-30), Laura Friedman (Dem-43), Mike A. Gipson (Dem-64), Timothy S. Grayson (Dem-14), Ash Kalra (Dem-27), Brian Maienschein (Rep-77), and Philip Y. Ting (Dem-19).
