An Opportunity to Get Current in the Registry of Charities and Fundraisers
Over the past month, thousands of California nonprofits have received a notice from Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office at the California Department of Justice (DOJ) informing them that their organization’s status on the Registry of Charities and Fundraisers is “delinquent” but has temporarily been marked as “Current – Reporting Incomplete.” These nonprofits now have the time-limited opportunity to update their filings and get back into “Current” status by submitting overdue documents and fees no later than January 15, 2026.
CalNonprofits has been advocating for changes to the Registry process for several years and is working with the Attorney General’s office to improve the Registry, modernize the system, and support our nonprofit sector in staying current. We are happy to report that there are changes afoot, and we want to thank the team at the Department of Justice for making this opportunity available.
A new and improved Registry of Charities and Fundraisers will be launched in 2026, and as the DOJ continues to work toward an improved system, we strongly encourage nonprofits who are currently “delinquent” to take advantage of this one-time opportunity to get “current.”
The DOJ has posted a short (12 minute) “how-to” video. CalNonprofits is following up with organizations, as well. As a reminder, you may search the Registry here to verify your organization’s status.
