We are a statewide policy alliance of more than 10,000 organizations, representing and promoting California's growing nonprofit sector. We sponsor the annual California Nonprofits Day in Sacramento and commissioned the landmark study: “Causes Count: The Economic Power of California's Nonprofit Sector.” Other work we engage in to nurture the nonprofit environment in California include the Nonprofit Student Debt Project, Nonprofit Overhead Project, Vote with Your Mission, and we're one of three partners who launched Grant Advisor. CalNonprofits Insurance Servicers is our social enterprise that assists more than 1,000 nonprofits with insurance every year.

Membership Associate

The California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits) has an opening to join our small team as the Membership Associate in our San Francisco office.  

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Membership Associate is a key position in ensuring the smooth operation of CalNonprofits, with a focus on membership support, and office administration. While this role is focused on administrative support, for the right candidate, there is also room to grow and expand these responsibilities into other areas (like communications and event planning). This position would be ideal for an experienced administrative professional or for a person at the beginning of their career. Given the training necessary for this position, we are asking for a two-year commitment.  

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Membership Support: Nonprofits across the state belong to CalNonprofits, and their membership is an important source of support for our organization. This position uses our CRM database (MemberClicks) to update and add new members, help new members access their benefits, and mail invoices and other correspondence to members. Duties also include recognizing our new members on social media, creating new member packets, tracking incoming checks, and data entry.

Office Support: This position plays a key role in keeping our operation running smoothly. Duties include administrative support like bulk mailings, ordering printed materials and office supplies, filing, copying, and spreadsheet preparation.

Events: CalNonprofits sponsors events around the state, including California Nonprofits Day, regional town halls, workshops, and our nonprofit convention that will take place in Los Angeles in October this year.  This position plays a key role in preparing materials for our CEO and Policy Director’s speaking engagements, coordinating invitations for events, administrative support, and more.

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Intermediate MS Office proficiency, comfortable with internet research 
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently 
  • At least 1-2 years’ experience in a professional office environment (preferably nonprofit, government, or higher education)
  • Meticulous attention to detail and follow-through skills

PREFERRED ATTRIBUTES

  • Familiarity with Macs and other Apple products (we only use Macs in our office).
  • Experience using a Customer Relationship Management software (we use MemberClicks)
  • Appreciation for community nonprofits, and familiarity with the nonprofit sector (as a volunteer, employee, board member, client, constituent, etc.)
  • Experience with social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter

EDUCATION:

WORKING CONDITIONS

CalNonprofits’ office atmosphere is relaxed and flexible, we laugh a lot, and we get things done.  

Work involves potential pressures generated by volume of work, frequent interruptions, seasonal work periods, and occasional irregular hours to meet deadlines and achieve objectives. This position requires communication in English verbally, in person, by phone, by email, on Skype, and in meeting/presentation settings. 

Physical Demands

Work will include speaking, listening, seeing, extended periods of computer operation, possibly sitting for long periods. Work may include lifting up to 25lbs (with accommodation as necessary), bending, and stretching.

Reports to: Executive Assistant to the CEO

Schedule: 40 hours per week

Location:  San Francisco, CA (Our office is located in the historic Flood Building, steps away from the Powell Street BART)

Pay: Range for the position is $22 to $24 an hour, depending on experience. 

Benefits: Full time employees are eligible for employer-paid health insurance, dental, vision, and life insurance, and, after two years, an employer-matched 403b retirement plan. CalNonprofits is a Public Service Loan Forgiveness qualified employer.
