Policy Update: Equity Bills

Some good news coming out of the legislature this week: Assembly Bill 2489 (Ward), one of two recent bills we’ve expressed concerns about, was held in Assembly Appropriations and will not move forward.

CalNonprofits is now opposing the other problematic contracting bill, Assembly Bill 2557 (Ortega), which passed the Assembly this week. You can read the opposition letter here.

We are thankful to all who provided feedback about the potential impacts of these two bills and will continue to keep you updated on ways for you to join us in this advocacy.

Also on the positive front – two of our jointly supported CA Nonprofit Equity Initiative bills are advancing this week! They are:

  • Assembly Bill 2322 (Hart and Bennett) –  streamlines small grant programs (passed the Assembly Wednesday.)
  • Senate Bill 1246 (Limón) – strengthens the state’s Prompt Payment Act (passed the Senate unanimously on 5/21; expected to pass today.)
