California Nonprofits Day 2018

Every year, California legislators are invited to choose a Nonprofit of the Year in their district and come together to celebrate at the California Nonprofits Day Luncheon. This event fosters relationships between elected officials and nonprofits doing important work in their communities. This year Assemblymember Monique Limon, Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Nonprofits, introduced a resolution in the Assembly declaring June 5, 2019 California Nonprofits Day (click here for the text of the Resolution.)

Looking back at California Nonprofits Day 2018
On Wednesday, June 6th, 2018, an inspiring group of leaders from around California traveled to Sacramento to be recognized as Nonprofits of the Year at California Nonprofits Day (scroll down to see pictures from the day).

Nearly 100 (97 to be exact) state senators and assemblymembers selected nonprofits in their districts for the honor and more than 400 legislators and nonprofit people attended a sold-out awards luncheon in the state capitol.

Assemblywoman Monique Limón (Santa Barbara), chair of the Assembly Select Committee on the Nonprofit Sector, opened the luncheon by noting how nonprofits in her district immediately jumped in to help after wild fires struck. During his keynote address, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson highlighted how nonprofits are a powerful force for good, with a “fierce commitment to changing California for the better.”

Nonprofits from across the state travelled to Sacramento for the awards ceremony, for example, Luis Outumuro with the Triumph Foundation left Rancho Cucamonga that morning at 2am to be at the event. Tim Robbins, the writer, actor, and director was also in attendance on behalf of the Actors’ Gang, a nonprofit in Los Angeles that was chosen by Assemblymember Sydney Kamlager.

“High energy, warmth, joyfulness, and people from every corner of the state -- a wonderful day," commented Jan Masaoka, CEO of CalNonprofits. “From North Coast Opportunities in Ukiah to Casa Familiar in San Ysidro, we congratulate the honorees who were recognized for making their California communities stronger.”

A list of the awardees and the program from the day can be downloaded here.  A video montage of the event is below. The nonprofit honorees were featured in over 25 media articles throughout the state and a compilation is featured underneath the photo gallery below.
