On Thursday, October 18th, over 300 nonprofit leaders from around California participated in panels and conversations about nonprofits and policy in this new political and social reality. Attendees engaged in thought-provoking discussions, got a behind-the-scenes peek at how policies get made in Sacramento, and learned from each other and experts in our field. Morning Plenary Opening Speaker
Attorney General Xavier Becerra As the chief law enforcement officer, the Attorney General is responsible for overseeing nonprofits in California. The Attorney General has oversight over fundraising, enforcing regulations and working to safeguard the public — and the nonprofit community — from fraud. He previously served 12 terms in Congress as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. While in Congress, Attorney General Becerra was the first Latino to serve as a member of the powerful Committee on Ways and Means, served as Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, and was Ranking Member of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security. Prior to serving in Congress, Attorney General Becerra served one term in the California Legislature. He is a former Deputy Attorney General with the California Department of Justice. The Attorney General began his legal career working in a legal services office representing individuals affected by mental illness.
Keynote Speakers
Vu Le is the creator of NonprofitAF.com, a popular website that takes on both the serious and the funny issues nonprofit employees encounter every day. Le brings his irreverent sense of humor to the Rainier Valley Corps, a leadership development program in Seattle where he serves as the executive director.
Tamika Butler recently served as the CEO of Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust, where she led the effort to increase access to parks in Los Angeles communities of color. She is an outspoken activist and engaging speaker on racial justice, economic equity, and transportation planning.
