The White House Student Debt Challenge is an effort to increase awareness about student debt and income-driven repayment programs, such as Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE). Income-driven repayment is a key part of qualifying for Public Service Loan Forgiveness and a great way to manage student debt while working for a nonprofit. We joined the Challenge as part of our commitment to raise awareness and engage California’s nonprofit community on the important issue of student debt and its impact on the nonprofit workforce.

Nonprofit organizations that sign on the Challenge agree to the following:

· Inform all employees and members at least two times a year of their ability to enroll in PAYE or other income-driven repayment plans.

· Train our HR and membership service staff on the importance of helping borrowers understand their student loan repayment options and the steps that must be taken to enroll in PAYE or other income-driven repayment plans.

· Provide enrollment materials at any large conference or training events

·  Host a webinar with our members to inform them about their income-driven repayment options.

·  Use our digital platform to highlight materials regarding these programs for both our staff and the constituencies and stakeholders we work with.

We’ve already taken steps to meet this challenge and will increase our offerings in the coming months to provide our members and their employees with the tools necessary to make informed choices about student loan debt. If you have questions, comments or suggestions about how we can help please contact Christina Dragonetti.
