UPDATE: The first hearing of the Assembly Select Committee will be held Wednesday June 21, from 2 pm to 3:30 pm, State Capitol, Sacramento, Room 444.
We have historic news for the California nonprofit community! For the first time, an Assembly Select Committee has been created to focus on the Nonprofit Sector.
The California Legislature has a broad array of issues to deal with and one way to vet ideas and hash out strategies is through select committees -- small legislative bodies appointed for a special purpose. There have been committees formed on everything from clean energy to wine, but no committee for nonprofits – until now.
CalNonprofits has been working for the creation of a Select Committee on the Nonprofit Sector for more than a year. We've finally found the right leader -- Assemblymember Monique Limón has agreed to take the helm and was officially appointed yesterday by Speaker of the Assembly Anthony Rendon as the Chair of the first-ever new Select Committee on the Nonprofit Sector. This select committee will provide a structure to develop and implement more effective collaborations between California’s elected officials, government agencies, philanthropic leaders, and nonprofit organizations that will help create new strategies, innovative policies, and meaningful programs to improve the economic and social well-being of millions of Californians.
Our CEO Jan Masaoka heralded the announcement, “Our state’s nonprofit and philanthropic sectors not only represent the dreams and aspirations of California's varied communities, they are robust with human capital, financial capacity and innovative potential. Government, nonprofits and philanthropy working together can identify and advance partnerships and solutions that will benefit all Californians. We thank Speaker Rendon and Assemblymember Limón for their commitment to the nonprofit community and their leadership on this valuable endeavor.”
We also thank the League of California Community Foundations and Philanthropy California, a joint initiative of Northern California Grantmakers, San Diego Grantmakers, and Southern California Grantmakers, for their advocacy in support of creating the Select Committee.
Committee membership and hearing dates will be determined at a later date. We'll keep you posted!
