CalNonprofits Articles

Last year the California legislature passed SB 1343 expanding the requirement for who has to be trained on sexual (and other) harassment issues, largely in response to the #MeToo movement. Previously, only supervisors had to take the training, and it was only required for organizations with 50 or more staff. Now, it is required for all employees in organizations with 5 or more paid staff. The required training has to be completed by the end of this year.

The training must meet certain standards and must be repeated every 2 years. New employees must be trained within 6 months of hire or promotion to a supervisory position.

Non-supervisor training = 1-hour session
Supervisor training = 2-hour session

Employee manual and posted notices updates: organizations with five or more employees will also need to update their employee manuals with the training requirements, anti-harassment, and retaliation policies; plus hang updated posters and hand out the California sexual harassment brochure (all available here). CalNonprofits Members can get free help building a compliant Employee Manual from ThinkHR - login for details.

The Department of Fair Employment and Housing will be developing sexual harassment trainings by the end of the year, but those are not yet available. If you want to get started (and finished!) sooner, we encourage you to find the vendor or option that works best for your organization.

CalNonprofits Members Get FREE and Discounted Harassment Training

If your organization is a CalNonprofits Member (click here if you're not sure) your supervisors can take the required harassment training for FREE through ThinkHR. If you don't have your login information for ThinkHR, please contact Marvin Miller.

For the rest of your staff (non-supervisors), we have negotiated discounts on the required harassment training from Compliance Training Group, a California-based company. Trainings are available in English and Spanish. The cost depends on the number of staff and how you would like the information delivered:

E-learning pricing is based on the number of staff who will be taking the training (i.e. the number of sessions purchased) and the training can be completed anytime within 30 days of purchase.
Webinar pricing is based on the number of attendees enrolled for a specific date/time.

Both options are accessed electronically and are available for mobile devices as well.

Compliance Training Group accepts multiple payment options, including major credit cards and invoicing. Please note that if you choose to get an invoice then pay by credit card, an additional fee will apply. Online credit card payments and check payments on invoices do not incur additional charges.
