Knowledge is power, and CalNonprofits works to gather and share relevant data about the collective scope and impact of nonprofit organizations. We advocate for better data, share available data, offer perspectives on how to interpret nonprofit data, and on occasion conduct our own research.
Our research informs our public policy actions as we respond to the needs of nonprofits in California. We use our research to educate legislators, regulators, and other policymakers, promote the nonprofit sector, and elevate our collective concerns and solutions.

Causes Count: New Findings is the result of extensive research into California’s large and economically powerful nonprofit sector, which continues to be an important driver for both jobs and community well-being.
Published in 2019, the report summarizes the noteworthy size, variety, diversity, and overall magnitude of California’s nonprofit sector. It also offers insights on government-nonprofit partnerships, explores the impact of donor-advised funds, and discusses the widening disparities within the nonprofit sector.
